Vegas Summer League: Day Eight
by: Joseph Treutlein - Director of Scouting/Analytics
July 13, 2007
Game Two: Memphis Grizzlies 84, Los Angeles Clippers 90

Memphis Grizzlies

Rudy Gay
13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, 1 turnover, 4-16 FG, 1-4 3PT, 4-4 FT

-Rudy Gay had a very tough game, settling for a lot of pull-up and fade-away shots from mid-range, and not having the touch to consistently convert on them.
-Over the course of the game, Gay did hit one three-pointer and one pull-up jumper from just inside the arc, but most of his scoring came by attacking the basket.
-Gay, on multiple occasions this game, started his drive to the basket from behind the three-point arc, and was able to make it all the way to the basket on just one dribble due to his incredible length and long strides.
-Gay also showed off a nice-looking hook shot with both hands on some of his drives, hitting one of them from 10 feet out, but for the most part wasnít able to convert on them.
-If Gay can improve on that hook shot to the point where he can consistently hit it from 10 feet out, he will be an even more dangerous weapon, as the shot is nearly unblockable, especially by defending wings.

Mike Conley Jr.
9 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 6 turnovers, 2-10 FG, 0-1 3PT, 5-6 FT

-Mike Conley had a solid overall game here, but his outside shot still is not falling, even though he looks pretty confident with it, not hesitating to take it every time heís open.
-If he puts in work, his shot should eventually improve, as he has pretty good form and isnít a horrible shooter as is.
-Conley got most of his assists off good ball movement, just passing the ball around the perimeter and finding open jump shots for his teammates.
-Conley did a good job attacking the basket here again, using his shifty style centering around fakes and hesitation dribbles to consistently get his man off balance.

Kyle Lowry
20 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover, 8-15 FG, 0-4 3PT, 4-7 FT

-Kyle Lowry had a very strong showing in this game, attacking the basket relentlessly with and without the ball, getting a few putbacks by doing the latter.
-Lowry drove left and right, hitting floaters with his right hand or getting to the line when he decided to take it all the way to the hoop, not being afraid of contact at all.
-Lowry also got out in transition well, finishing on a few lay-ups there.
-Lowry didnít do much in terms of creating for others, mostly focusing on his own slashing when he had the ball, if he didnít pass the ball off on the perimeter first.

Tarence Kinsey
8 points, 6 rebounds, 1 turnover, 3-8 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT

-Tarence Kinsey was having another quiet, yet solid game up until the end of the third quarter, when he was fouled shooting a three-point shot and appeared to have injured his right shoulder, being forced to leave the game because he couldnít attempt the free throws.
-Prior to injury, Kinsey scored on a pull-up jumper coming off a screen from 18 feet out, a spot-up jumper from 12 feet, and a lay-up off a cut to the basket.
-Kinsey was playing great man defense in the game, moving his feet and pressuring his man when he had the ball.

Los Angeles Clippers

Paul Davis
12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 turnovers, 4-10 FG, 4-6 FT

-Paul Davis had a solid game, mixing it up inside and out while showing a little ball-handling ability as well.
-Davis hit two spot-up shots from 20 feet out early in the game, and added a pull-up shots from 18 feet later on, showing he can put the ball on the floor once or twice when he needs to make some room for his shot.
-Davis was active on the boards, mixing it up inside and scoring on one strong putback jam, while getting to the line on some other putback attempts.

Guillermo Diaz
13 points, 2 rebounds, 4-13 FG, 2-5 3PT, 3-3 FT

-Guillermo Diaz struggled with his shot, but never really forced the action, just taking what came to him and mostly missing open perimeter shots.
-All of Diazís jump shots came from the 20+ foot range most of them being fairly open, but he just was having an off night with his shot.
-Diaz did have one athletic transition dunk in addition to the few outside shots he converted on, and he also played aggressive man-to-man defense.

Al Thornton
19 points, 10 rebounds, 6 turnovers, 8-18 FG, 1-3 3PT, 2-4 FT

-Al Thornton looked brilliant and times and out of control at others in this up-and-down performance.
-Thornton did most of his damage from the mid-range here, pulling up and fading away from 15-18 feet out, putting up a smooth, quick jump shot that he barely had the separation to get off.
-Thornton did a very good job of getting just enough space with his dribble to put up his shots, looking very impressive doing so.
-Thornton also hit on one spot-up three-pointer and attacked the rim on occasion, but only off cuts and in transition, never off his own dribble.
-Thornton got into trouble a few times with the ball, either by being reckless in transition or by doing too much with his dribble in the halfcourt.

Jared Jordan
6 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 turnovers, 2-6 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT

-Jared Jordan had a relatively quiet game, mostly just running his teamís offense and picking his spots to attack, not really making many noticeable plays.
-Jordan used hesitation dribbles whenever he tried to attack the basket, not possessing much quickness, and finishing with a patient floater on his one score in the lane.
-Jordan also hit a pull-up jumper from 20 feet out coming off a screen, though missed another of the same variety.
-Most of Jordanís assists came from simple ball movement, with him finding open shots on the perimeter as opposed to him creating them off dribble penetration.

Game Three: Boston Celtics 84, Milwaukee Bucks 76

Boston Celtics

Gerald Green
8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 turnovers, 3-12 FG, 1-3 3PT, 1-2 FT

-Gerald Green really struggled in todayís game, missing on an assortment of pull-up jumpers in the 15-18 foot range, and not creating many good shot attempts in general off the dribble.
-Green did score twice on drives where he took the ball to the basket, and he hit a spot-up three-pointer, but for the most part he just wasnít converting on the tough shots he was settling for.

Glen Davis
16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 6-8 FG, 4-7 FT

-Glen Davis had a very nice performance for the Celtics in this game, sticking to his strengths and working in the 8-18 feet range, hitting spot-up jumpers or going to fade-aways in the post, which he hit a few of on the baseline.
-Davis also scored on two hook shots in the post, and drew fouls by posting up on a few other occasions.
-Davis did a good job on the boards as well, boxing out and frequently pursuing rebounds on both ends of the court.

Leon Powe
11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 turnovers, 3-6 FG, 5-10 FT

-Leon Powe had a quiet game relative to what heíd been doing earlier in the week, not doing as much damage in the painted area, but making the most of his possessions and still being a strong force on the boards.
-Powe did most of his damage facing up from around 10 feet out, putting the ball on the floor once or twice to take it to the hoop, getting to the foul line most of the time, but finishing with spinning lay-ups or scoop shots on others.
-Powe had some problems putting the ball on the floor, though, as he lost control of the ball on a few occasions, as his face-up game could still use some work.

Allan Ray
14 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers, 5-14 FG, 1-3 3PT, 3-3 FT

-Allan Ray had an up-and-down game, struggling with his outside shot at times, spending most of his time on the perimeter in the game.
-Ray hit on two spot-up shots from about 18-20 feet out to go along with a pull-up three-pointer.
-Ray did have one nice left-handed drive to the basket where he drew contact and still put the ball in for the and-1 opportunity, but that was all the success he had attacking the basket in the game.

Gabe Pruitt
14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 5 turnovers, 6-9 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-2 FT

-Gabe Pruitt had his best showing of the tournament today, getting extended playing time with Rajon Rondo sitting out the game.
-Pruitt started off the game strong, hitting a pull-up jumper from 15 feet out, and hitting on two spot-up jumpers from 20 feet out later in the game.
-Pruitt also hit on a one-handed, fade-away three-pointer from a few feet behind the three-point line on one occasion when the shot clock was winding down, banking it off the glass.
-Pruitt didnít attack the glass much in the halfcourt, getting a few lay-ups in transition, but he did have one athletic dunk on a right-handed drive when the baseline was wide open.
-Defensively is where Pruitt really stood out, though, as he played in-your-face defense all game long, locking down his man and picking off a few passes in straight-up situations, where he showed off his very nice hands and instincts in doing so.

Milwaukee Bucks

David Noel
18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers, 8-17 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-2 FT

-David Noel had a strong game here after a pretty non-descript one yesterday, scoring inside and out and hustling to make his presence felt elsewhere.
-Noel scored on a multitude of lay-ups by cutting to the basket, and also did some damage posting up, scoring on a hook shot and a left-handed lay-up off a dropstep.
-Noel also hit on some deep perimeter shots, and had some athletic and powerful transition jams.

Lynn Greer
13 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers, 6-12 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-1 FT

-Lynn Greer had another underwhelming game today, not showing much in terms of point guard skills and not finding his outside shooting stroke.
-Greer did hit on one spot-up 20 footer, but did most of the rest of his damage going to the basket, scoring on simple drives in the halfcourt and transition.
-Greer had some trouble protecting the ball on his drives when there were multiple defenders around, though, getting stripped on a few occasions.
