Memphis star Hakim Warrick grabbed an offensive board with 17 seconds left in the game and layed it in to take the lead. Sweet shooter Ryan Forehan-Kelly then faked left and spun right for a fadeaway from behind the college arc to tie it up for the Mavericks with 3 seconds left sending the game into overtime. Forehan-Kelly then went on to score 7 more points during the extra period, but it wasnt enough to overcome the significantly more talented Memphis roster, finally falling 121-117. The bonus news for Memphis? Rudy Gay showed up signed and ready to play with 21 and 10 in only 24 minutes of action.
Ryan Forehan-Kelly Ryan tied the game on a fadeaway twenty footer at the end of regulation and then scored 7 of the Mavericks points in overtime trying to lead them to victory. He went 8 for 14 from the field and scored 22 points. In addition to his offense Ryan showed a nice recovery after getting crossed-over by Tarence Kinsey leaping and blocking Tarences 18 jumper.
Marcus Hatten If Forehan-Kelly excelled during overtime, Marcus Hatten is the player that kept them in the game allowing him to do so. Not listed on the Dallas roster, Hatten showed up today wearing #9 and dominated after coming in off the bench in the first quarter. Scoring 29 points on 10 of 19 shooting and 5 of 7 from behind the arc, Hatten not only lead both teams in scoring but did so in a variety of ways. He used his speed and quickness to fake defenders out of position with some nice hesitation moves getting to layup for multiple And-1 opportunities, and didnt flinch as he hit back-to-back threes in the fourth. He also played some good defense picking standout Grizzlies guard Kyle Lowry several times with one key steal occurring with 20 seconds left in overtime down by only 2.
Marcellus Sommerville Sommerville can score, theres no denying that. Similar to Grizzlies swingman Carlos Powell, he can put it in the bucket, but doesnt contribute much elsewhere. Hes not shooting a great percentage this summer, but hes not afraid to jack it up.
Jelani McCoy McCoy rolled his left ankle with 2 minutes to play in the 4th, but after working it out was deemed well enough to come back in and play overtime.
Rudy Gay A very good summer league squad got a whole lot better today when the 8th pick of the draft, Rudy Gay, dressed and got into the game. After signing with the Grizzlies yesterday Gay went out today and scored 21 points on 50% shooting with several monster put-back dunks and huge slams in transition. He also showed good form on a 3, a nice 10 hook on the baseline and a couple of 18 and 20 shots. In addition he pulled down 10 boards (4 offensive) giving him a double-double for his first game. All of that despite not really being quite in game shape. In the second, after blocking his man on defense, he ran the break and then asked the coach to take him out for a breather. Talking with Rudy after the game he mentioned that they told him he would be tired his first game and they were right. In the fourth quarter Rudy went up to contest a shot and when he came down his foot slipped out from under him. He pulled his groin slightly and they took him out of the game and iced him down as a precaution. Rudy said that he was a little sore, but would be fine for their next game.
Hakim Warrick Every game Warrick steps onto the court in Long Beach hes the best player on the floor. Hakim scored 23 points today, pulled down 7 boards and dished 4 assists. The real story though is how fluid his moves are and how smooth his jump shot looks. Warrick has been displaying a variety of twitch moves with little up-and-unders and spins allowing him to get easy buckets while on the block. Not just limited to put-backs and alley-oops anymore, Warrick looks to have really turned a corner in his game which should get Memphis fans excited
Tarence Kinsey Tarence scored 11 points today on 5 of 10 shooting while pulling down 6 boards. He showed a great cross-over that got his defender completely out of position, but was unable to get the shot off before his man recovered and blocked him. He scored a wide open layup on a nice hesitation move and scored another layup managing to shift the ball in his hands to avoid the defender. He also shot a smooth 20 from the baseline. Kinsey has gotten an invite to training camp and a partially guaranteed contract from the Grizzlies.
Alexander Johnson Alex uses his big, wide body and huge shoulders to muscle players around, getting great rebound position and sealing his man on offense to get easy buckets. Scoring 25 points on 7 of 11 shooting and grabbing 13 rebounds (7 offensive) Johnson has been a beast in the paint this summer. A good natured and amusing guy, Alex has hustled and played hard in every game and the coaching staff loves him for it.
