NBA Training Camp Watch: Southeast Division
by: Jonathan Givony - President
October 6, 2006
A look at the training camp rosters of all five Southeast Division teams, with an eye on open spots on each roster, and the potential favorites we might see emerge.

Atlanta Hawks

Guaranteed Contracts:

Esteban Batista
Josh Childress
Speedy Claxton
Royal Ivey
Joe Johnson
Solomon Jones
Tyronn Lue
Zaza Pachulia
Josh Smith
Salim Stoudamire
Marvin Williams
Shelden Williams
Lorenzen Wright

Non-Guaranteed:

Cedric Bozeman
Andre Brown
Lionel Chalmers
Kaniel Dickens
Matt Freije
Andreas Glyniadakis

Analysis: With only 13 guaranteed contracts, the Hawks have could very well keep one or two players from their extended training camp roster. Considering the injury history of Speedy Claxton and the fact that the point guard position was by far Atlanta’s biggest weakness last year, Lionel Chalmers might have a decent chance to make the squad. The problem is that he’s a point guard in size only, certainly not in mentality. It’s surprising (or perhaps not…) to see why General Billy Knight continues to ignore opportunities to improve his team’s makeup by whiffing on inviting a player like Aaron Miles for example who most certainly could have not only made this team, but also played an important role for them. Knight prefers “versatile” players who can play multiple positions and offer plenty of athleticism, and Chalmers, Andre Brown and Kaniel Dickens certainly fit that mold. Matt Freije has a chance to stick if he can really impress the coaching staff with his outside shooting. Considering the type of players that Knight covets the most, Andre Brown might be the best bet to stick of the six players invited. On a sidenote, power forward Solomon Jones became the highest paid 2nd round pick in this draft when the Hawks decided to give him a 3 year contract for 2.2 million dollars.

Charlotte Bobcats

Guaranteed Contracts:

Alan Anderson
Primoz Brezec
Matt Carroll
Melvin Ely
Raymond Felton
Othella Harrington
Walter Herrmann
Ryan Hollins
Brevin Knight
Sean May
Adam Morrison
Emeka Okafor
Bernard Robinson
Jake Voskuhl
Gerald Wallace

Partially Guaranteed:

Kevin Burleson ($70,000 guaranteed)

Analysis: The Bobcats have 15 guaranteed contracts on their roster so there was really no need to invite any other players to camp. Considering the tight budget the Bobcats operate under, saving every penny possible certainly helps as far as ownership is concerned. Kevin Burleson is owed $70,000 and is currently only the 3rd point guard on Charlotte’s roster. Ignoring the fact that he was roommates with Bernie Bickerstaff’s son (and assistant coach--JB) in college, it was very difficult to see what the Bobcats see in him after watching him play extensively at the Orlando Summer league. Maybe the 25% he shot from the field last year is the reason they are keeping him around.

Edit: The Bobcats added Joe Shipp, Donta Smith and Will Conroy to the mix here as well.

Miami Heat

Guaranteed Contracts:

Earl Barron
Michael Doleac
Udonis Haslem
Jason Kapono
Alonzo Mourning
Shaquille O'Neal
Gary Payton
James Posey
Wayne Simien
Dwyane Wade
Antoine Walker
Jason Williams
Dorell Wright

Partially Guaranteed:

Vincent Grier $70,000
Robert Hite $75,000
Daniel Horton $75,000
Chris Quinn $75,000

Non-Guaranteed:

Antonio Burks

Analysis: If you’re looking for the one team that spent more than anyone on bringing undrafted rookies into camp, it’s the Miami Heat. No less than $305,000 was spent on Vincent Grier ($70,000, contract becomes fully guaranteed on November 4th), Robert Hite ($75,000), Daniel Horton ($75,000) and Chris Quinn ($75,000, compensation increases to $150,000 on November 3rd), and that’s not even including the $150,000 they gave Mike Gansey before cutting him the day before camp started. What’s ironic is that a player who wasn’t guaranteed a dime in Antonio Burks might beat out all four of them for the fourteenth spot on the roster. Early reports say Chris Quinn seems to be impressing the most amongst the rookies, but Miami is actively anticipating Jeff McInnis being waived by New Jersey. Point Guard or combo guard seems to be the biggest need on Miami’s roster.

Orlando Magic

Guaranteed Contracts:

Trevor Ariza
Carlos Arroyo
James Augustine
Tony Battie
Keith Bogans
Keyon Dooling
Pat Garrity
Grant Hill
Dwight Howard
Darko Milicic
Jameer Nelson
Bo Outlaw
J.J. Redick
Hedo Turkoglu

Partially Guaranteed:

Travis Diener ($125,000)

Non-Guaranteed:

Jackie Manuel
Kasib Powell

Analysis: The Magic are all set with 15 guaranteed contracts under roster, but decided to bring in two extra bodies into camp regardless. Travis Diener has been guaranteed $125,000 (compensation increases to $275,000 on October 31st. Compensation increases to $664,209 on December 15th), but that’s just a formality considering the player he is and the way he looked in summer league. Jackie Manuel will reportedly take the D-League route once he’s waived, and Kasib Powell may decide to return to play overseas if the offer is right.

Washington Wizards

Guaranteed Contracts:

Gilbert Arenas
Andray Blatche
Calvin Booth
Caron Butler
Antonio Daniels
Jarvis Hayes
Brendan Haywood
Antawn Jamison
Michael Ruffin
Darius Songaila
DeShawn Stevenson

Partially Guaranteed:

Peter John Ramos ($360,000)
Roger Mason

Non-Guaranteed:

Mike Hall
James Lang
Kevinn Pinkney
Donell Taylor

Analysis: Another fascinating training camp battle will go down here in Washington DC, as the Wizards only have 11 fully guaranteed players under roster and could certainly use some help off the bench if last season was any indication. Both of their draft picks this year were told to stay overseas, which means that the five players invited to camp have an even better chance of sticking if they manage to impress the staff enough. Considering the fact that he already played for the Wizards for a full year last season, Donell Taylor looks like a pretty safe bet to make the team as long as he plays better than what he showed us at the Las Vegas Summer League. He still has upside and has no restrictions on his contract whatsoever on when he can be cut. Besides him, Mike Hall seems to have established himself as a legit possibility to make the team based on what he’s shown the Wizards early on. Everyone that is around him raves about his fundamentals, shooting touch and basketball IQ. Kevinn Pinkney strung together some impressive moments when we saw him in Las Vegas; the Wizards have a more active and experienced version of him in Michael Ruffin, but he’s got some size and bulk to him for sure. Roger Mason has also reportedly been faring very well in camp so far, and the fact that he’s been guaranteed some money means that he already has an edge over his counterparts.

Despite being partially guaranteed, the $360,000 Washington owes him should mean that Peter John Ramos’ job is safe, even though he’s barely developed over the past two years from what we’ve seen in summer league and international play.
