7'9...any chances of him making it into the league? he looks pretty decent on youtube.com videos. it sounds like he wants it pretty badly by his work ethic, wonder if anyone would ever take a chance on him and put him in the d league?

My First post, ahh, the memories...
Sun Ming Ming (7 foot 8 and 3/4 inches, I know he wasn't drafted) to the Rockets - The hilarity has me laughing at the possibilities. The possibilities have me laughing at the mental image. The mental image:

Ming (Sun)
YM: Pass me the ball (in Mandarin)
SMM: Huh? ops: Oh yeah, this is basketball......... (probably in Mandarin, but maybe he speaks Cantonese or something)
YM: Pass me the ball (this time more insistently, again in Mandarin)
SMM: Do you want a bounce pass? (translation provided free of charge)
YM: Just hurry up and give me the ball, the 24-second shot clock is running out and there's not a lot of oxygen up this high in the atmosphere. (I hope you appreciate that I am translating this pro bono)
SMM: For the glory of China!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Throws the ball, soccer inbound style towards Yao Ming, who is on the other side of rim, needless to say the pass does not get there, but in fact hits the rim before Sun releases the ball at the top of its trajectory, the opposing team rebounds , passes it down the floor, has a five on three and proceeds to throw an embarassing alley-oop dunk that provides a ESPN Sportscenter top 10 nominee, one of nine to be provided in the period it takes for the game to be over (the other one is probably some bogus one with old balding men in the Midwest competing in some strange sort of wrestling, i.e. olympic-style, freestyle, arm, toe, ankle, elbow, esophagus, etc.)
YM: You are worthless, you give me no face (face is real important in the Chinese culture of whose language Yao is currently using to his advantage)
SMM: Why? I passed the ball! (Surprisingly for you, not in Mandarin, but in the form of a deeply ashamed face)
YM: I did not mean for you to lose face, next time let go of the ball before it hits the rim, or simply do not stand so close to the rim, or do not stand so close to the rim on the opposite side of the rim as I, or hold on to the basketball, or touch the basketball, or speak the name of the glorious People's Republic, or breathe, or forget to tuck in all 4.5 feet of your jersey, or walk, or ever show your face, or declare for the NBA Draft again.

He redshirted at Ventura Junior College out here in California during the 2005-06 season. They are in our conference and I know their coaches very well so I have seen him workout a few times in person. First off he is legitimately as tall as they say he is we had a 6'8 kid that is now the starting center at Georgia Southern and Ming was clearly a little over a foot taller than him.
I saw him on four occasions go through individual workouts with one of their coaches and in them he looked very lathargic and slow. In the NBA he would really struggle to get up and down the floor and would be a liability. He didn't seem to have good stamina either so I don't think he could ever sustain an 82 game season or if he did he would never play rotation type minutes on a regular basis. Offensively he can hit the college three pointer from a standstill with real consistency and has a nice release on his shot. In the post he has a little turnaround jumper and hookshot towards the middle from both the left and right blocks but again he is so slow in his movements I don't know how effective these would be in a game situation. He was very limited with his ballhandling. Defensively I didn't get to see anything, but you would have to think being that big he would at least be able to alter shots if not be a good shotblocker and he should be able to rebound the ball.
In summary I don't think he could ever be a legitimate player in the NBA but he could be a novelty act to throw in the game for a few minutes here and there. I will say a less mobile Pavel Podkolzin with a better offensive game and we all know the success he had. I hope the best for him though because he is an extremely nice kid and very funny. I know he is in Rush Hour 3 and I believe one or two other movies that will be coming out.

After his surgery to repair a faulty gland or something in his brain, he has shed a lot of that lethargia and according to sources, because the surgery was done in Winston-Salem, I have been privy to a lot of information about the situation, that he has started to gain stamina and he's making some progress. He'll make it eventually I think, he's just going to have to keep on working.

yea he had that surgury after he left ventura jc sometime this past year. it had something to do with his pituatary gland that alot of extremely tall people have. they call it gigantism i believe. i have not seen him after the surgury.

Gheorghe Muresan had similar surgery I think when he came to the NBA. I cannot see Sun being quick enough or having the stamina to play a full NBA season. He'd need to prove himself in NBA D League or an International League first. If he is getting film roles then this may be the way forward for him, if he could learn the fundamentals, he could at best be a nice defensive role player as his sheer size would make him a force inside by the paint and he should be able to rebound and block also. Hopefully his surgery has improved his health and he can move on from here but I cannot honestly see him becoming a genuine NBA player.

Having seen the updates on Sturgess and Kenny George, I googled our other favourite giant Sun Ming Ming. Sun is now playing in a Japanese league and apparently got chosen for the leagues All Star game so after the sad news about Kenny, at least Sun is still playing.
