NEWS AND NOTES

The most recent Bracket Projection was posted on Tuesday and is in the article below this one. Be sure and check it out if you haven't gotten a chance to see it.

-I will be unable to check email for the next couple of days. I'm hoping to have a rundown of Saturday's games posted late Friday night/early Saturday morning.

HIGHLIGHTED MATCH-UPS

-ROBERT MORRIS AT DUQUESNE. Duquesne is 7-3 and currently has an RPI in the 40s. This is only their second game in twenty days, so it will be interesting to see how that layoff has affected them. Robert Morris is 7-4 and in an inner city rival, so it should be somewhat of a challenge. It should also end up helping Duquesne’s RPI in the long run if Robert Morris can do well in their league. I’m not saying that Duquesne is a tournament team, but they are off to a good start and appear to have their program moving in the right direction.

-SAM HOUSTON AT SAN DIEGO STATE. Sam Houston is undefeated on the year, but this is by far their toughest challenge yet. SDSU is 8-3 and playing very well. This would be a great RPI game for them because Sam Houston looks like they’ll win a lot of games. For Sam Houston, this would likely turn out to be one of their most impressive road wins of the season, which would go a long way in boosting the quality of their resume. Lots on the line in this game today.

-SAINT JOSEPH’S AT SIENA. Siena is 6-3 and has some pretty decent wins, but still has a very small margin for error when it comes to receiving an at-large bid. Saint Joseph’s has quite a bit of talent, but their record doesn’t really reflect that. They cannot get discouraged because this is the kind of game where they could easily end up losing, and if they want to begin to rebuild their resume they need to take care of business.

-BUTLER AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. This is a rematch from last year’s Bracket Buster game, but it doesn’t appear to be nearly as evenly matched. Southern Illinois has really struggled this year, but has been tough to beat at home, so they could end up giving the Bulldogs a big game. Butler is 11-1 and has some notable wins already, but this would probably end up being another one come March. A loss would drop their stock somewhat, but it looks as though they’re still a solid NCAA Tourney team. It was exciting last year and hopefully will be again this year.

-CONNECTICUT AT UCF. This is one of UConn’s tougher assignments of the year so far. They’re 8-2, but this is really their first true road game, and UCF has some pretty talented players. They should be pumped for this one, so UConn needs to be on upset alert.

BUY GAMES

-SACRED HEART AT BOSTON COLLEGE. Sacred Heart has won four of their last five after losing their first six, but shouldn’t give BC too many problems. BC can get to 9-2 with a win.

LOYOLA, MD AT ILLINOIS. Loyola has really been struggling lately, whereas Illinois is coming off a big win against Missouri. The Illini can’t afford to lose this one, and a win will get them to a modest 8-4.

-SOUTHERN MISS AT MISSISSIPPI. After a slow start, Southern Miss appears to have built a little momentum, but they are coming off of a loss to McNeese State. Ole Miss is undefeated and nationally ranked. It’s an in-state match-up and it could be emotional, but Ole Miss clearly looks like the better team.

-MOUNT SAINT MARY’S AT OREGON. Oregon has lost two straight and really needs to rebound. A loss would continue to hurt their resume, so the Ducks really need to play well and take care of business.

-DELAWARE STATE AT XAVIER. Delaware State has just one div1 win and isn’t likely to get their second tonight. Xavier is trying to snap a two game losing streak.

-LONG BEACH AT CALIFORNIA. Cal shouldn’t have too much trouble taking care of business in this one.

-HOWARD AT SAINT MARY’S. This is a big time mismatch. Saint Mary’s has played very well at home and should roll in this one.
