D-League Draft DX Mock Draft

D-League Draft DX Mock Draft
Oct 31, 2014, 02:26 pm
Who are the best prospects in the D-League draft? Who can we expect to get taken in the first round? We took a stab at this by sifting through the player pool, using our ridiculously comprehensive back-end database, and putting our thoughts on paper as follow.

The 2014 D-League Draft will be held tomorrow, November 1st (3:30 EST), you can find the official list of players eligible to be picked (along with their contract status) right here.

For those hard-core fans looking to follow the proceedings, the D-League will again be using the Cisco WebEx web and video conferencing software (whicih you can join via the official website).

The order of the first round of the D-League reads as follow:

1. Grand Rapids Drive (from Delaware)
2. Santa Cruz Warriors (from Erie)
3. Austin Spurs (from Maine)
4. Santa Cruz Warriors (from Maine)
5. Grand Rapids Drive
6. Texas Legends
7. Idaho Stampede
8. Bakersfield Jam
9. Oklahoma City Blue (from Fort Wayne)
10. Westchester Knicks
11. Reno Bighorns
12. Canton Charge
13. Santa Cruz Warriors
14. Rio Grande Valley Vipers
15. Sioux Falls Skyforce
16. Iowa Energy
17. Los Angeles D-Fenders
18. Rio Grande Valley Vipers

This mock draft has been conducted without taking into account team needs. Look for plenty of movement to happen between now and when the draft starts, as many picks will be swapped hands, which renders a team-needs based mock irrelevant. Needless to say, every D-League team needs to get their hands on as much talent as possible.

Here's a handy map, courtesy of the D-League, outlining where all 18 franchises are located.

And without further ado, here is our 2014 D-League Draft Mock Draft. The number listed before the player's college is their age.

1. Elliot Williams - 6'4" SG 25.3 Memphis
Super athletic former NBA first rounder, shockingly cut by Philadelphia after the team invested 1200 minutes of playing time in developing him. Finally healthy after his career was derailed early on by injuries. Looked like a legit NBA rotation player last year and likely won't last more than a few weeks (or days?) in the D-League before getting a call-up. At age 25, still has some upside to develop into something.

2. Robert Covington - 6'7" SF/PF 23.8 Tennessee State

Spent all of last season on Houston's roster and was mostly on assignment with Rio Grande Valley. Released in a numbers crunch (despite being guaranteed $150,000) after playing poorly in Summer League, as the Rockets had some very difficult decisions to make. Versatile forward who will be monitored closely by NBA teams and likely won't spend much time in the D-League.

3. Erik Murphy - 6'10" PF 24.0 Florida
Highly skilled stretch four man with excellent shooting range. Drafted by the Bulls in 2013. Hasn't found himself at the pro level yet, but plays a position of need in today's pick and roll heavy NBA.

4. Marquis Teague - 6'2" PG 21.6 Kentucky
Former NCAA Champion and NBA first round pick has been a major bust as a pro so far, but is younger than many of the seniors who will be drafted by NBA teams this upcoming June, and thus deserves a second look.

5. Carrick Felix - 6'6" SG 24.2 Arizona State
The #33 pick in the 2013 draft, Felix had the first two seasons of his contract fully guaranteed, meaning he's being paid 816 thousand dollars to play in the D-League this year. Super athletic wing who is still working on developing his skill-level and feel for the game. Played nine games in Canton last season and mostly struggled.

6. Dominic Waters - 6'1" PG 28.0 Portland State
Pure point who led the Israeli league in assists in 2013. Hasn't quite found his niche at the pro level, but should be a coveted commodity at this level due to his excellent vision, high character and ability to operate on the pick and roll.

7. Justin Jackson - 6'8" PF 24.0 Cincinnati
Tough, physical, high energy super athletic power forward who rebounds and defends extremely well. Blocks shots at an impressive clip. Originally signed in Greece but didn't play a single game there.

8.
Milos Milisavljevic - 6'4" PG 21.1 Serbia
One of the most interesting stories of this year's D-League season. Played in the Serbian third division last year, but received a call-up to the Serbian national team training camp as they prepared for the World Cup in Spain this summer due to numerous injuries. Spent time in Vitoria, Spain during their preseason with Euroleague team Kutxa Laboral, but elected to sign in the D-League instead after being lured to Santa Cruz by the Golden State Warriors. NBA Draft-eligible as a 1993-born prospect. Certain to be taken with one of Santa Cruz's three first round picks. Athletic European guard with strong defensive ability and solid outside shooting ability. Will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the American style of play after competing at a very low level last season.

9. D.J. Seeley - 6'4" SG 24.9 CS-Fullerton
All-Conference player in the Big West and Portsmouth Invite in 2013. Spent last season in the Adriatic League and Germany. Excellent shooter with a strong feel for the game and a willing defender.

10. Fuquan Edwin - 6'6" SF 23.1 Seton Hall
Long, athletic wing who was one of the best perimeter defenders in the NCAA the past few seasons. Solid spot-up shooter. Should get some NBA looks as a “3'n'D” guy this D-League season.

11. David Stockton - 5'11" PG 23.3 Gonzaga
Tough, smart, aggressive point guard. Lacks size but has a very long wingspan. Excellent passer and floor general. Will execute offensively and put strong pressure on the opposing guard defensively with his length and quick feet. Rich man's Josh Magette.

12. Joseph Bertrand - 6'6" SG/SF 23.6 Illinois
Not very productive in college, but showed flashes of talent in the Big Ten with his solid length and athleticism. Needs to continue to improve his outside shot, and might not be enough of a scorer to justify getting picked this high, but has upside to build on.

13. Brady Heslip - 6'2" SG 24.3 Baylor Canada
Will likely be the best shooter in the D-League this year. Severely undersized for a shooting guard, but has range that extends well beyond the NBA 3-point line. Would be absolutely deadly in a system like Reno or RGV. Had a great summer with the Canadian national team.

14. Kammeon Holsey - 6'8" PF 24.1 Georgia Tech
Undersized power forward who crashes the offensive glass and has a knack for scoring around the basket. Showed he can score the ball efficiently in the ACC. Needs to expand his shooting range.

15. Kevin Tiggs - 6'5" SF 30.5 East Tenn. St.
Combo forward with excellent length, athleticism and aggressiveness. Can post up, create his own shot, and finishes impressively around the basket. Somewhat of a tweener, and not much of an outside shooter, but plays extremely hard and will be a major mismatch at the D-League level.

16. Joonas Caven - 6'11" SF/PF 21.8 Finland
NBA Draft-Eligible stretch four-man. Spent the last few years in Spain with Joventut. Somewhat one-dimensional, but that one dimension has a lot of value in basketball these days.

17. Michael Dunigan - 6'10" C 25.3 Oregon
Has a NBA body and flashes impressive and inconsistent talent on occasion. Only 25 years old, so could still have some upside at this point.

18. Chane Behanan - 6'7" PF/C 22.0 Louisville
NCAA Tournament Champion in 2013. Booted off the team due to numerous off-court transgressions. Went undrafted this past June. Extremely talented (former McDonald's All-American) with great hands and terrific offensive rebounding ability, as well as some scoring touch, but questionable intangibles and the fact that he's an undersized center may push his stock down.

Second Round

19. Andre Emmett - 6'4" SG 32.1 Texas Tech
Scoring machine who averaged 23 points per game in 2012 as a member of Reno. Ball-stopping tendencies and advanced age might make him less attractive to some of the NBA-affiliated teams, but his propensity for putting up numbers at this level is unquestioned.

20. Damien Wilkins - 6'6" SF 34.8 Georgia
Former undrafted player who carved out a nine year career in the NBA, thanks to his terrific athleticism, defensive intensity and strong feel for the game. Never developed into much of a shooter, but is very well respected and can probably still help a team despite being in the twilight of his career.

21. Ben Hansbrough - 6'3" SG 26.8 Notre Dame
Tyler's brother spent last season as a spot-up shooter in the ACB after carving out a niche as a third point guard for the Indiana Pacers the year before. Turned down plenty of offers in Europe to try and give the NBA another shot. Has a good feel for the game and solid range on shot, but lacks great athleticism and playmaking ability.

22. Lenzelle Smith - 6'3" SG Ohio State
Started 100+ games for Thad Matta in the Big Ten, steadily improving every year. Not super skilled, but brings great intensity defensively, a role-playing mentality, and the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter. Will be a favorite of the NBA-affiliated teams who often value character and fundamentals over pure talent.

23. Tristan Spurlock - 6'8" SF/PF 23.7 Central Florida
Athletic combo forward with great physical tools and intriguing shot-making ability. Has plenty of upside to tap into, but has underachieved quite a bit throughout the years, due to his lack of intensity.

24. Daniel Coursey - 6'10" PF/C 22.4 Mercer
Mobile big man who played extremely well in Mercer's shocking upset of Duke in the NCAA Tournament last year. Runs the floor well, has a solid skill-level, and has nice timing as a shot-blocker. Seems to have potential to grow into, something not many 6-10 players in the D-League Draft pool can say.

25. John Bohannon - 6'11" C 23.0 UTEP
Skilled and skinny 6-11 big man who shows intriguing scoring touch around the basket. Blocks shots, rebounds at a high rate, and can even pass the ball a bit. Frame needs to improve.

26. Chadrack Lufile - 6'9" PF/C 24.1 Wichita State Canada
Undersized center who plays extremely hard and is a major presence on the glass. Not very skilled offensively, but can help a team with his strong frame and high intensity level.

27. Kevin Foster - 6'2" SG 24.3 Santa Clara
One of the best scorers in college basketball from 2010-2013. Scored over 2400 points, largely with his ability to make shots from the perimeter. Undersized for a shooting guard and doesn't have much of a conscience, but his ability to fill it up should make him a nice D-League player.

28. Sebastian Koch - 6'8" PF 23.7 Elon University Germany
Former German national team player at the youth level made 40% of his 3-pointers last season on 5.6 attempts per game at Elon, despite standing 6-8. Also posted a very nice assist to turnover ratio.

29. Reggie Moore - 6'1" PG 24.9 Western Wash
Former Pac-10 first team all-freshman is a scorer with excellent speed and ball-handling ability. Got lost along the way, but is looking to resurrect his career in the D-League and could be a nice find at this stage of the draft.

30. Marcus Hall 6'1" PG 29.2 Colorado
Globetrotter who has put up big scoring numbers in a variety of international leagues. Can shoot the ball with range and knows how to run a team. Not much of a defender, but ready to step into a D-League lineup and be a primary ball-handler.

31. Eloy Vargas 6'10" PF/C 25.8 Kentucky Dominican Republic
Former top-30 high school recruit didn't do much at the college level at Florida or Kentucky, but had a solid season last year in the ACB with Fuenlabrada as a backup. Has a decent skill-level, and is a capable rebounder and shot-blocker, which should allow him to emerge as a useful rotation player in the D-League.

32. Robert Vaden 6'6" SF 29.6 UAB
A second round draft pick in 2009 by Oklahoma City, Vaden never played in the NBA, but went onto have a solid career in Europe on mid-level teams in Belgium and Germany. He has two years of D-League experience underneath his belt already, where he was one of the best shooters in the league, so he should have no problem stepping in from day one and doing much of the same for whichever team decides to draft him.

33. Dwayne Mitchell 6'3" SG 32.1 La Lafayette - Mitchell played in the D-League already in 2008 and 2009, and was one of the best scorers in the league. Once considered an absolute freak athlete, it will be interesting to see how much of that Mitchell has retained into his 30s, as he hasn't played too much games in the past 18 months.

34. Travon Woodall 6'0" PG 25.5 Pittsburgh
Among the NCAA leaders in most passing metrics in 2012 and 2013, Woodall didn't really find himself at the pro level as a rookie, bouncing around Greece and second division Turkey. His value as a floor general should be well established, though, and although he isn't much of a scorer or all-around shot-creator, he's a solid enough outside shooter to not be considered an offensive liability. Playing over 3000 career minutes under Jamie Dixon, he's obviously well coached and ready to play a role for a team looking for someone solid to run their system.

35. Kodi Augustus 6'8" PF 26.9 Mississippi St.
Augustus struggled last season in the Adriatic League, but was a solid college player in the SEC, and as a 6-8 big man who can do a little bit of everything, including facing the basket, has some value in the D-League.

36. Stephen Madison 6'5" SG 23.3 Idaho
An All-Conference player in the WAC, Madison scored in bunches for Idaho thanks to his impressive athleticism and propensity for getting to the free throw line.

37. LaQuentin Miles 6'5" SG 23.6 Central Arkansas
An impressive athlete who can create his own shot at will, Miles got to the free throw line over 10 times per-40 last year, even if he wasn't always able to capitalize once there. Excellent in transition and making plays around the basket, Miles could thrive in the up-tempo nature of the D-League.

38. Ravern Johnson 6'7" SF 26.2 Mississippi St.
Once considered a NBA prospect as a 6-7 small forward who made 40% of his 3-point attempts, Johnson's pro career hasn't really taken off since his college days. He'll attempt to get back on track in the D-League, for the second time actually after a short late-season stint in 2012 with the Iowa Energy.

Third Round

39. PeShon Howard 6'3" PG 23.8 USC
Well-traveled point guard who completed his college career with a fine season at USC after three sub-par seasons at Maryland, the last of which can be explained by the season ending ACL tear he suffered as a sophomore. Strong lead guard with good size who still needs to improve his jump shooting and ability to score efficiently inside the arc.

40. George Beamon 6'4" SG 23.5 Manhattan
Averaged 18+ points per-game during his junior and redshirt senior years which bookended an 4-game 2013 campaign ended prematurely by a severe ankle injury. Scored with terrific efficiency a year ago. Prolific jump shooter despite somewhat unusual mechanics who doesn't create much for others or score with ideal consistency inside the arc. Capable of lighting up the scoreboard when he gets hot from beyond the arc as he'll take a make difficult, contested shots.

41. Bill Clark 6'5" SF 26.5 Duquesne
Broke into the NBA consciousness with a terrific showing at the 2011 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament after four solid years at Duquesne. Has since played in the Cyprus and the Ukraine as well as the lower divisions of France and Turkey. Has consistently been consistently productive throughout his European career. A solid all-around player with nice athleticism and strength who can be especially effective when he's making spot up jump shots consistently, which he's done at a higher level some years than others.

42. Jamal Jones 6'8" SF 21.7 Texas A&M
Tall wing who can space the floor. Loves the corners. Late bloomer who averaged 13.4 points per-game in his only season at Texas A&M. Struggled with his efficiency and shot selection at times. Fluid athlete who could really benefit from the quality of competition and coaching he'd receive in the NBADL.

43. Keala King 6'5" SG 23.3 Pikeville
One-time Arizona State guard who transferred to Long Beach State before finishing his career at Pikeville. Led the program to a conference championship before being upset in the 2nd round of the NAIA Tournament. A consensus top-50 recruit in the high school class of 2010. Not a freak athlete, but a versatile, fairly skilled guard who can make open shots and create a bit off the dribble.

44. Jarvis Threatt 6'2" SG 21.5 Delaware
A prolific shot creating guard with intriguing athleticism who will look to grow into a viable candidate for the 2015 NBA Draft. Turned pro after being dismissed from Delaware in June. Not a very efficient scorer, but a very productive player with lots of natural ability. Could beat defenders off the dribble consistently at the college level. Will he be able to do the same in the NBADL if his jump shot hasn't improved?

45. Shaun Pruitt 6'9" C 28.9 Illinois
A top-100 recruit in the high school class of 2004 who has played almost everywhere at this stage. Spent time in Europe and China immediately following his NCAA career, but has spent the last few seasons in Latin and South America. Big body with long arms who can make an impact on the glass.

46. Brandon Goode 6'11" C 22.5 Norfolk State
Late blooming center who had a nice senior year to cap his career in the MEAC. Nice size, but still developing his frame. Made an impact boards and as a shot blocker, but faces a steep transition in terms of quality of competition. Plays with nice energy and developed a nice lefty hook shot as a senior. Skill level away from the rim and the variety in his offensive game are still a work in progress.

47. Nick Barbour 6'3" SG 24.9 High Point
A high scoring college guard who has spent the last two seasons in the Spanish second division. Functioned as a fairly high volume shooting specialist a year ago with Palencia. Can run hot from the perimeter and has a knack for setting his feet quickly and getting his shot off under pressure. Not a great athlete or finisher, but can help spread the floor.

48. Kevin Anderson 6'0" PG 25.8 Richmond
The point guard of the Justin Harper led Richmond team that won 30 games in 2011. Had a 10 game stint in the D-League in 2013 where he shot uncharacteristically poorly from the field. Rebounded with a strong year in the Greek and Turkish Leagues last season. Heady lead guard who overcomes with lack of elite athleticism with aggressiveness and instincts.

49. Asauhn Dixon-Tatum 7'0" C 23.7 Auburn
Long, athletic center who can protect the rim as a shot blocker. A catch and finish threat offensively. Flashes a budding skill set at times, but is still a ways away from being a polished product on the offensive end. Fairly foul prone, but brings the type of unique physical tools that could pay dividends on the defensive end at the NBADL-level in time.

50. Luther Head 6'3" SG 31.9 Illinois
Drafted in the first round by the Houston Rockets in 2005, Head played six seasons in the NBA, and hasn't done much since getting flushed out of the league in 2011. He agreed to a few pro contracts, but never actually got on the plane, and had a couple of short D-League stints with Austin and Rio Grande that never went anywhere either. Now at age 32, Head will try to show that he still has something left in the tank, which he should be able to do as he was once considered an excellent outside shooter.

51. Naadir Tharpe 5'11" PG 23.2 Kansas
One of a handful of players looking to follow the P.J. Hairston route of becoming NBA Draft-eligible in the D-League instead of transferring once the program decided to move in a different direction. Often a lightning rod for criticism, Tharpe made the most of the tools at his disposal, but struggled under the immense pressure of being the starting point guard at Kansas. While it's unlikely that he'll emerge as a legit NBA prospect due to his average physical tools, Tharpe now has a chance to get his career back on track and set himself up for professional basketball with a strong year in the D-League.

52. Omari Johnson - 6'7" PF 24.9 Oregon State Jamaica
Played 26 minutes per game in the ACB last season, putting up solid numbers for the worst team in the league. Versatile power forward who does a little bit of everything

53. Ray Turner - 6'9" PF/C 24.7 Texas A&M
Not a lot of legit size in this pool, which makes Turner fairly attractive at 6-9. He crashes the glass and can score inside a bit.

54. Manny Atkins - 6'7" SF 23.7 Georgia State
ex-Virginia Tech player resurrected his career at Virginia Tech, providing valuable floor spacing from the combo forward position. Shot 43% for 3 last year on a lot of attempts.

55. Tymell Murphy - 6'5" SF 23.8 Florida Intl
Statistically one of the most intriguing players in the pool, Murphy is a super athletic combo forward who averaged 20 points per-40 shooting an outrageous 65% from inside the arc. He needs to work on his outside shot but he's a playmaker defensively and on the glass

56. Tre Bussey - 6'2" SG 22.9 Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern guard had a cup of coffee with the Utah Jazz last week, but wasn't able to join their D-League affiliate Idaho as he had already signed a D-League contract making him eligible for the draft. Made 39% of his 3s as a senior.

Later Round Sleepers

-Jonathan Mitchell - 6'7” PF 27.2 Rutgers
Ex-Florida/Rutgers played is a classic undersized four man for the D-League. Can do a little bit of everything and has solid experience in Europe.

-Corey Raji - 6'5" SF/PF 25.9 Boston College
Raji was an excellent scorer in the ACC from 2007-2011, but his pro career hasn't taken off playing in smaller leagues like Luxembourg and third division France. He might be worth taking a flyer on.

-Melvin Johnson - 6'5" SG 24.4 Arkansas State
Might be the best shooter in the draft on paper. Made 49% of his 3s as a senior after hitting 44% as a junior. Averaged over 20 points per-40 every season in college

-Keith Chamberlain - 6'9" PF 26.9 Grinnell
Chamberlain looks like a near-lock to get drafted by Reno as his former assistant coach at Grinnell is now the head coach of the team. Plus, he is Anthony Davis' cousin.

-Ledrick Eackles - 6'1" SG 25.8 McNeese State
McNeese State rookie can score in bunches, shot 38% for 3 the past two seasons and gets to the free throw line 8 times per-40 minutes. Doing it DeAndre Kane style at age 25 makes that slightly less impressive though.

-Luis Jacobo - 6'5" SG 23.8 IPFW
First team All-Conference Summit League player averaged over 20 points per-40, shooting 39% for 3 as a senior at IPFW. At 6-5, that's worth taking a look.

-Brian Oliver - 6'6" SF 24.1 Seton Hall
6-7 combo forward who can space the floor. Made 42% of his 3-pointers for Seton Hall last season on quite a few attempts

-Michael Porrini - 6'2" PG 25.6 Kent State
Versatile point guard who doesn't score much (or very efficiently), but does everything else pretty well. Rebounds, passes, gets in the passing lanes.

-Joel Wright - 6'7" PF 24.7 Texas State
Turnover machine who scores at a very high rate at 6-7 by getting to the free throw line at will

-Omondi Amoke - 6'7” PF/C 25.4 Cal-State Fullerton
Rebounding machine big man, somewhat undersized to play at the highest levels

-Keith Wright - 6'8” PF/C 25.2 Harvard
Strong big man who can do a little bit of everything inside the paint, even if he's somewhat undersized for the highest levels of basketball. Was a very good college player who hasn't seen his pro career take off playing in Sweden and Poland.

-Marcus Melvin - 6'8 SF/PF 32.6 N.C. State
Melvin was a big time scorer in the ACC back in the day, and has played around the world in the decade since then, spending time in Argentina, Romania, Kuwait, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, the Philippines, but never in the D-League. He can play the role of versatile power forward that teams in the D-League seem to like so much these days.
